After experimenting briefly with various post-Impressionism techniques, Dalí became one of the core members of the Surrealist group in 1929.

Dalí's approach to Surrealism, like that of Magritte, weds superior technical skills with a vivid "paranoiac-critical" outlook to produce some of the most provocative and memorable works of that movement.

His lifelong companion was Gala, a russian emigre married to Surrealist founder Paul Eluard when Dalí first met her in 1929. She became his wife, business manager and premiere model.
