Kalyana Sundaram, MD (Waterloo)
Originally from India, since 1997 Kalyana Sundararn has been practicing general cardiology, congestive heart failure service, nuclear cardiology and interventional cardiology as the senior member of Cedar Valley Medical Specialists of Waterloo. For the past four years he has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Ul Hospital & Clinics (UIHQ. Kal teaches Cardiac Cath and Interventions in UIHC's Cath Lab and trains cardiology fellows. Kai received the prestigious Upjohn Achievement Award for excellence in medicine in 1995. He was also the proud recipient of an American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship grant. Kai's research interests focused on autonomic regulation of coronary circulation and heart rate variability analysis. After his arrival at UIHC in 1993, Kai completed three years as a fellow in cardiovascular diseases (including chief cardiology fellow fi-om 1995 to 1996), then served as a fellow associate in interventional cardiology until 1997.
Kal completed his residency and internship at the State University of New York (SUNY) Health Science Center in Brooklyn (1990-1993). He also was Clinical Instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine at SUNY Kal completed his medical degree at Madras University, India in 1983. From 1986 through 1990, he focused his research on cardiovascular pharmacology as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey.
A member of UI's Referring Physician Advisory Council, Kai remains exceptionally active in teaching and training. He also served as a conference director for the Cardiology Gala 2001, and again in 2002. He recently presented Cardiac Intervention & Lifestyle Modifications as part of the program organized by the Cardiac Emergency Network and Allen College.

Philip Habak, MD (Davenport)
Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, Philip Habak arrived in this country in 1965. After completing his internship and residency training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and the University of Iowa, Phil served as a Major in the U.S. Army from 1969 through 1971 at the 11th Evacuation Hospital in Pusan, Korea and Fort Ord, California.
Following a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease here, Phil served as an Associate from 1973 to 1974. In 1974, he founded Cardiovascular Medicine, P.C. in Davenport in 1976.
Phil became involved in the Iowa Lipid Research Program in 1973. "This experience proved quite useful in my career," he said. Phil's Cardiovascular Medicine, P.C. has since developed a Lipid Clinic.
Among his many professional activities, Habak has served as Iowa Governor for the American College of Cardiology, President of the Iowa Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, and President of the Scott County Medical Society. He is a member of the Board of the Directors for Genesis Medical Center, Genesis Health Plan, and has served on the Board of the Iowa Affiliate of the American Heart Association.
