How You Can Help

Every day, you make contributions by sharing the expertise you gained during your time in our Division. Now, you can help students, fellows, and faculty in our Division advance their work by making a contribution to the Division.

Support from alumni and friends gives the people of our Division the resources they need to make their own contributions to the medical community. Your gift can help:

  • Purchase state-of-the-art equipment for classrooms and laboratories
  • Recruit outstanding faculty
  • Create awards for outstanding students and faculty

Over the years, gifts have helped create several endowed funds, including:

  • Dr. Lyle A. and Mabel R. Baker Cardiology Research Fellowship Fund
Funds used for an annual research fellowship

  • Lewis E. January Learning Resource Unit
Funds used for educational materials, textbooks, computer software and hardware, and upgrade/maintenance of patient teaching model

  • Wendy K. Hamilton Stroke Research Fund
Funds used for start-up costs for new investigator(s) conducting stroke research, especially focused on younger stroke patients

  • Richard T. Zahn Cardiology Professorship Fund
Funds used to support a professorship in Cardiology

  • Viola Vorhies Nia Fund
Funds used for support of heart research, including faculty/staff travel and/or support for visiting scholars, lecturers and research collaborators.

Francois M. Abboud Distinguished
Professor and Endowed Chair in
Internal Medicine

Dr. Francois M. Abboud

After 41 years of dedicated leadership in the University of Iowa Department of Intemal Medicine, Dr. Francois Abboud is stepping down from his position as head of the Department in January, 2002. To honor Dr. Abboud's extraordinary accomplishments and help ensure the department's place at the forefront of training and education, medical research, and patient care, we are establishing the Francois M. Abboud Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine. Since Dr. Abboud has worked closely with so many of you over the years, we are inviting his colleagues and friends to contribute and help make this honor a reality.

You are well aware of the reach of Frank's influence — not just at The University of Iowa, but on an international scale — as an educator and innovator in heart care and intemal medicine. A man who has received numerous honors and awards, served as President of the American Heart Association, and been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Abboud is known worldwide for his contributions to cardiology and medicine. Creating an endowed chair will ensure that Dr. Abboud's name and legacy live on in the UI College of Medicine. The Abboud Chair will be held by all future heads of the Department of Internal Medicine.

Your generous support of this campaign will honor a man whose life has made a substantial difference — both personally and professionally — to those who have had the privilege of knowing and working with him. If you have questions, feel free to call Mitch Beckman at (319) 335-3305 or (800) 648-6973. You also can reach him via e-mail at. You can make an online gift at our website, www.givetoiowa.org/abboud.
