Silly Stuff for Kids

August Poetry Contest Winner

Alexandria J. Bower (Age: 17)

Mom

It all started on September 21, 2003
And you changed me
Now I have to hold on to these images
That?s all I have left
Memories flood my mind
Questions still remain
Answers I can?t find
The sun rises just to fall
Skies covered in clouds sound out a call
A call for dreams to take over
To escape from reality
They send my mind and soul
Into a fantasy
With details so real
Almost mistaken for the state of mind
   where everyone is fake
The dream was too good to be true
And then in a blink of an eye
She disappears
Just like before
But this time
   simply and peacefully

(Editorial commentary: It?s okay to write sad poetry. I used to tell my students that, "It gets the sad out." It gives us a chance to deal with the sadness and put it in a place where it hurts less than it did before. Congratulations, Alexandria!)
